Bed and breakfast Marketing – How To Hit The Search Engines!
Article by Bob Beacham
The number one strategy for your bed and breakfast marketing has to be getting yourself noticed in the search engines. If Google doesn’t know where you are, nobody else does either!
There are lots of bed and breakfast promotion companies around that will offer you all kinds of deals to get your B & B noticed. A popular one is to offer to get you in five hundred or more search engine rankings for just eighty or a hundred dollars. It sounds like a good idea.
It isn’t.
A recent survey by Nielsen Research of the habits of half a million search engine users found that very nearly 50% of users pick Google. Next, with nearly 25% is Yahoo and another 10% use Bing (was called MSN). That’s 85% coverage from just three search engines – and you can submit to them yourself for free! What’s more, of the remaining 15% a good proportion feed their results off of “the big 3″ anyway. Why pay someone else?
If you look into bed and breakfast marketing in any detail the other thing you are going to come across often is SEO – search engine optimization. This is all about making your bed and breakfast website or blog as appealing as possible. Big companies spend a lot of money on this stuff, and it is important, but there’s a limit to what a small business can budget for so you need to concentrate on what’s effective.
If you haven’t yet got a website for your bed and breakfast business then don’t. Get a blog. A blog can do all that a website can but is inherently more search engine friendly. Recently blogs have become more and more popular, with all sizes of business, because Google and the others seem to be favoring them. There are many reasons for this but suffice it to say that particularly for the B & B owner, they are more cost-effective and more powerful than “traditional” sites.
If you have a website already, don’t worry. You can add a blog to it easily enough, or get whoever built your website for you to do it. It shouldn’t be very much money particularly when the world-leading blog software, WordPress, is actually free!
Beyond choice of website versus blog, or both, search engine optimization is no longer about hiding bits of code on web pages. Really that’s a course of action that is far less useful than it was a couple of years ago. Search engines are smarter, they spend more time “reading” your content. The trick for effective bed and breakfast marketing therefore is to make sure your pages are tightly focused. Keep talking about your bed and breakfast and sprinkle in content about local events and attractions. Keep it regional. Don’t get side-tracked into using part of your site for your hobby or talking about what your kids are doing at school. For your bed and breakfast to be successful you need to treat it as a business. The same goes for your website.
